With Boldmere's squad depleted, and Rugeley off to a great start to the season, it was always going to be a battle in this opening game of the Shield fixtures. With Rugeleys game based on a very defensive mentality, Boldmere couldn't break through to create many chances.

Boldmere's goalkeeper George Smith, commanded his penalty area superbly and everything that came towards the box he handled superbly.Brad Priddey and George Jenkins in defence were also coping comfortably with Rugeleys rare attacks Brad Priddey in particular was helping to create several opportunities for counter attacks. However, due to sheer numbers in defence, Rugeley were proving very difficult to break down.

The only effort of any note in a dour first half was a Ben Caughtry shot from an Ethan Cabballero corner that just flew over the bar.Alistair Wells was covering every blade of grass in his efforts to make an impact on the game, but he was often out numbered in a packed midfield. This type of game was far more to Rugeleys liking than Boldmere's, but to their credit, Boldmere continued to try and play football in all areas of the pitch.

0-0 at half time and Boldmere's insistence on playing football cost them the opening goal. From a throw in on the half way line Boldmere defenders gave the ball away and Rugeley broke away and smashed the ball high into the net.

Will Jones reacted in exactly the right way and went at Rugeley straight from the kick off, and caused Rugeley to panic in defence. The rest of the game was spent in the Rugeley half as they hung onto their lead.

With three minutes left and Boldmere's unbeaten start to the season under threat they scored an equaliser that will live long in the memory. As a corner came out to Brad Priddey, he passed the ball out to Ben Caughtry who shaped up to cross, but dummied the ball past the defender. Ben ran down the wing and crossed a superb ball to the back post at waist height. Frazer Austin was waiting and with a brilliant piece of improvisation side footed the ball with the outside of his right foot into the net. The ball was very slightly behind him and to be able to score from the position he was in was pure class.

There was only going to be one winner, but unfortunately Boldmere couldn't create another chance. Again, despite being below par and failing to play their football, Boldmere's boys showed a lot of character in getting something out of a game without being at their best. Man of the match was Brad Priddey, for a great display of defending and always trying to play football when he got the opportunity to do so.

Boldmere Falcons S&S :    3

Vikings FC U10's:    3  (AET Vikings win 4-3 on pens)

Boldmere were denied a place in the next round of the Open Cup after a superb performance against one of the top teams in the Central Warwicks league, only to lose out in the lottery of a penalty shoot out. Vikings had only lost 1 game in the last 6 months, so Boldmere knew this would be a tough task, as well as a good test to see how far they have progressed and they didn't disappoint.

A good start from Boldmere as they took the game to Vikings with a long range effort from Declan Whiting just skimming the crossbar, as the midfield of Jamie Smith, Harry Simper, Niall Brennan and Matthew Brown took control of the game and gave the Vikings defence plenty to do. The defence of Lewis Barratt, Rory Doherty, Jodie Mason and Kieron Williams kept the Vikings attack quiet for the early parts of the first half, but with about 12 mins of the game gone, Vikings broke through and scored with their first attack on goal, a one on one with keeper Frankie Barrett, to take the lead against the run of play.

Boldmere refused to let their heads drop and were soon on the attack again. An excellent passing move led to Boldmere's equaliser as Kieron Williams played the ball out of defence to Jamie Smith on the left, with Jamie quickly switching the ball to Declan Whiting on the right. Declan looked up and crossed into the box for Niall Brennan, whose first time shot was parried by the keeper, only for Niall to head the ball over the line by the left hand post. A great team goal, but the joy was short lived as Vikings hit back shortly after, as a cross from the right was met by a Vikings forward on the near post, just as he accidentally collided with keeper Frankie and the ball bounced off the body of players and into the net. Unlucky for Boldmere who had been the more impressive team in the game so far, but once again they picked themselves and stuck to their task and were deservedly back on terms again just before the half time whistle. The superb Declan Whiting picked out Niall Brennan in space on the edge of the box and Niall side footed past the Vikings keeper to give Boldmere another leveller in a an exciting first half. Declans pass was reminiscent of the previous days goal at Villa Park where James Milner picked out Richard Dunne and earned Declan a possible new nickname "Milner", we'll just have to see if it sticks.

The second half was a more even game as Vikings upped their game and Boldmere started to tire. Lewis Barrett and Jodie Mason both made crucial clearances to stop Vikings taking the lead, while Rory Doherty and Kieron Williams were as cool as ever in calming things down, constantly passing out of the defence. Frankie Barrett in goal pulled off one good save "for the cameras" before two brilliant stops to deny Vikings again. Up front Jamie Smith had a good effort saved and Harry Simper and Matthew Brown were battling away keeping the Vikings defence busy. Niall Brennan and Declan Whiting were proving a real menace to the away side, as they kept up the pressure and the partnership was rewarded for the third time as Declan set up Niall just inside the goal area, where Niall turned and slotted the ball beyond the keeper for his hatrick and a deserved lead for Boldmere with about 15 mins to go.

Vikings had nothing to lose and pushed forward looking for the equaliser and Boldmere seemed to be heading for the next round, as they defended superbly at times and even had time to break away with Declan and Jamie coming close to increasing the lead.  With less than 2 mins of normal time left, a tame shot that looked to be well covered by Frankie was diverted into the net by a Boldmere defender in a desperate attempt to clear the ball. Extra time followed and passed very quickly with no real efforts from both sides, so penalties was to decide the outcome. Vikings won the penalty shoot out 4-3 in a best of  5 and progress to the next round.

An excellent and highly entertaining game played in good spirits by two very good teams. A phone call from the Vikings manager later in the afternoon heaped praise on an excellent Boldmere team "who could hold their own in the Premier division" and a wish that they could "avoid each other in the League Cup" at least until a possible Final.

Boldmere players should be proud of their performance, as the coaches and parents certainly were and should use this game as a building block for the rest of the season.

Well Done

Player of the Match was awarded to Declan Whiting for an excellent display where he set up all three of Boldmere's goals and came close himself on a few occasions. Special mention for Niall Brennan on an excellent hatrick and for giving the Vikings defence the run around all game.
