The first defeat of the season for a Colts team that have had very little football of late. Every player could not be faulted for effort, but on a hard bobbly pitch that wasn’t easy to play football on, it was always going to be close.

The game started off even and the first goal was going to be crucial. Ben Caughtry and Ethan Caballero were threatening to break the deadlock with several attacks, however, from one of those attacks the ball broke clear to a Burntwood player who was one on one with George Smith in the Boldmere goal. George did really well but the player managed to nick the ball past George and ran the ball into the empty net.

This was Burntwoods only attempt on goal in the first half, mainly due to the dogged defending of Brad Priddey and Alistair Wells. On the right hand side, Jake Freeman was constantly feeding good passes to the front two, but Burntwood were defending in numbers.

From one of those passes, Ben Caughtry went down the right wing and pulled a great ball back for Ethan Caballero, who took his time and shot into the bottom of the net. A great goal.

Frazer Austin in the centre of midfield was trying to win a battle with his opposite number, and kept the ball moving really well.

1-1   at half time and it could have gone either way.

In the second half, Will Jones won several balls and used the ball really well, keeping the front two well supplied with passes, but were met with a solid defence.

Boldmere’s defence was also solid, this time with George Jenkins stopping a lot of attacks, but the main reason was that Alistair Wells was reading the game from the back and intercepting everything that came into the boldmere half.

The turning point of the game was a very harsh decision by the referee to award a free kick out on the Boldmere right, when the ball bounced up off the uneven pitch and hit a player’s hand. The embarrassingly loud appeals for handball from the sideline put the young referee into a position where he felt compelled to give the free kick.

From the resulting free kick, the ball was smashed towards the goal and flew into the top corner of the net. After that, Boldmere never really threatened to get back, there were a couple of half chances, and one run from Ethan Caballero brought a good save from the Burntwood keeper.

So finally, six months on from the start of the season, Boldmere were defeated, but there was little to choose between the teams and Boldmere can be proud of their achievements this season.

The Man of the Match Award was chosen and presented by Premier League Referee Alan Wiley. His decision to choose Alistair Wells for his reading of the game and his all round defending was met with full agreement from the management. His summing up of the game was spot on when he said that there was nothing between the teams, barring the free kick.
